Week 7 Jesus begins
Last week we heard about someone who lived in the wilderness and ate bugs and honey - can you remember his name?
Thats right, it was John. We are going to watch a video about John now,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFuJEeXV7uU
That video used a word - Messiah. That's a word which means ' God's specially chosen one'. John's job was to tell people to get ready because there was a specially chosen person coming who was going to make them clean, not just by washing them in a river on the outside, but by washing them clean on the inside by filling them with the Holy Spirit.
John baptised people . Does anyone know what ' baptised' means? ( demonstrate dyeing a piece of material in beetroot juice ) It means to dip something into something else so that it completely covers it and changes it. Like this material has been covered and is now a different colour. You cant wash that colour out. It is changed forever. So, what does that have to do with John? Well, he told people to get ready for God coming, to stop being mean and selfish and greedy and doing things that made God sad. If someone comes to visit you at your house what do your Mum and Dad do? Do they tidy up? Do they hoover and put the cushions straight on the sofa and tell you to put away your toys? Maybe they make a cake or some special food? When someone comes to our house we like it to look nice. John was telling people that GOD was coming , but not to their house, to their hearts !! So he told people to tidy up their hearts - say sorry for bad thoughts and attitudes -and to show that they wanted to do that he offered to wash them in the river. When they got wet on the outside it was a sign to show that they really wanted to be clean on the inside too. When we get baptised we are showing everyone that we believe God has changed us forever and we cant go back to being the old people we were.
People in those days were really wanting God to come and visit them. Lots of people were excited by Johns message and came to get clean at the river. And then one day, guess who came along? Jesus!
Lets watch this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VMNO2MAmwA
John didnt want to baptise Jesus because He knew that Jesus had never done anything wrong. He didnt need to say sorry or get washed clean because He was already clean and right with God. But Jesus wanted to be a good example. He didnt say ' Oh Im God so I dont need to follow the rules'. He said ' please baptise me so that other people see that I am doing everything God asks ordinary people to do'. And what happened when Jesus was baptised? Can you remember? Yes, the Holy Spirit landed on Him ( He looked a bit like a dove) and God spoke from heaven . What did God say? That's right He said ' this is my son and Im pleased with Him'
