Week 4 - boy Jesus
So we learned over the past few weeks that God wanted to show us what He is like so He became a baby and was born into a normal family. He was called Jesus. Does anyone know what that name means? It means ' God ( or The Lord) saves' Names are really special. Sometimes our names mean special things. What does your name mean?
( Google the meanings of the kids names - it can sometimes be very enlightening!!!)
Anna/Anita -gracious and merciful
Hannah - grace
Harry - ruler
Edith - prosperous
Eddie - wealthy guardian
Avery - ruler
Isabella - God is my promise keeper
Solly - peaceful one
So Jesus started just like you and me as a tiny baby. And just like us He grew up. First He learned to walk and talk and play and then later, when He was a bit older He had brothers and sisters to play with. Does anyone here have brothers and sisters? We love our brothers and sisters alot but sometimes they can be a bit annoying. Im sure Jesus was a great big brother but maybe He was a bit annoying sometimes too .
When Jesus was big enough He went to school. In those days children only went to school until they were teenagers. They mostly learned about the Bible and they had to learn lots of Bible stories off by heart. The very clever boys and girls were allowed to stay at school so that they could study to be teachers. But the rest of them left as soon as they were big enough to go to work.
Jesus's Dad was called Joseph and can you remember what he did for a job? He was a carpenter. In those days most little boys did the same jobs as their dads. So Jesus grew up learning all about how to use tools and cut wood and make things. ( Show kids some woodworking tools) There's a special word for someone who learns a job from someone else. Its an apprentice. Jesus was an apprentice carpenter and when He left school He worked for His dad. Dont forget that all the time Jesus was growing up and going to school and working with His Dad He was showing us what God is like. So when we look at Jesus as a boy what do we learn about God?
Well, God loves families. He could have come as a grown up or a mighty king or a unicorn or a dragon or anything He wanted. But He wanted to live in a family. Do you remember we said right back at the start that God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit? He is made up of three parts so that He is never alone. God really doesnt like ' alone ness'. When He made Adam right back at the start of the world He didnt want Adam to be alone so He made Eve to be his wife. When God came to earth to live with us He came to live in a family. Families love one another, they help each other, they have fun together. This was all God's idea!
