week 5 - boy Jesus part 2

 Have you ever been on holiday?   Who did you go with?  Where did you go?  Did you have fun?

Well, when Jesus was  boy He went on holiday too!  Every year He went with His Mum and Dad and a whole lot of other people to a festival.  Lots of people went to Jerusalem which was a big city like Belfast.  There were lots of market stalls in the streets and music and food and everyone wanted to have a good time.  Sometimes people would arrange to meet up with their families - maybe their aunts and uncles and cousins and grandparents would all be there.  Remember how we said that God loves families!  They would remember all the good things God had done for them in the year and celebrate and say thank you in church.  Then they would relax and sleep and eat and play and do all the sorts of things you like to do on holiday.

One year when Jesus was about twelve His family went to the festival as they usually did.  Jesus met up with some of his cousins and friends and they all went off to hang out together. When it was time to pack up and go home Mary, Jesus's Mum was busy making sure she had everything and Joseph, Jesus's Dad was talking with some friends.  Because there were no cars in those days everyone walked everywhere or went on horses.  So a big group of people set off to walk out of Jerusalem towards home.  Mary thought that Jesus was with Joseph.  Joseph thought that Jesus was with Mary.  But in actual fact Jesus wasn't with the travellers at all!   It wasn't until teatime when the group stopped to have a picnic that Mary and Joseph called for Jesus and realised He wasn't there.   How do you think they felt?  Have you ever got lost and not been able to find your Mum or Dad?  It is a bit scary when that happens.  Mary and Joseph were really worried.  They asked everyone if anyone had seen Jesus but nobody had.   So once they had searched the whole group and couldn't find Him they decided to go back to Jerusalem to the place they had been staying to see if He was there.   But He wasn't there either!  Oh no!   Where was He?

Can anyone guess where Jesus was?  

He was in church!  And He wasn't just sitting there listening to nice church music or praying or enjoying being in the cool shade.    He was talking and arguing with the church leaders and lots of grown ups were standing around listening, amazed that such a young boy knew so much about God.  When His Mum and Dad found Him ( and they were really happy to find Him but a bit cross as well) they asked Him why He hadn't come with them and why He was in church.  And Jesus said ' Didn't you know I'd be here?  I have to do what my Father wants me to do and He wants me to help these church leaders understand who God is'  

This was the first time that Jesus told anyone why He had come.  He had come to show us what God is like and the first people He wanted to show were the church leaders.   I think He wanted to show them first because those were the people who stood up in church every week and told all the other people what God is like.

So last time we learned that God loves families.  And this week we learn that God loves the church and wants people not just to know stories about God but to actually meet Him and talk with Him and know Him.   And do you now something amazing ?  YOU are the church and so God wants to meet you and talk to you and you can get to know Him too!

Hands up who wants to meet Jesus?

 We are going to ask Jesus to come and speak to us and He will.  But He probably wont speak in a voice like Im using now.  Jesus speaks to our spirits which are in our middle here ( point to guts)  Sometimes His voice is like a picture that you see in your mind.  Sometimes its a feeling you get in your body.  Sometimes its some words from the Bible or from a song.  Mostly its the very first thing you think as soon as you ask Him to speak.  So lets all close our eyes.  Lets be very quiet.  And Im going to ask Jesus to come and speak to us all.  

(Do this quietly and simply - Lord Jesus, thank you that you want your church to know you and to hear your voice. Please come and speak to us now)   Wait for ten or fifteen seconds then get the kids to open their eyes and as them what Jesus said. Write down which kid said what and dont discount anything.

week 2 - nativity

 Last week we learned that God is made up of three parts.  Can we remember what they were? God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit live in heaven which is a special place that we cant see.  We know it is there but we can't see it.   Can you see the wind?  No, but you know it is there cos you can see it blowing things ( use a windmill to demonstrate)   We cant see God but we can see what He does, (and in the past lots of people saw what God had done and wrote down these things in a book.  All the stories of what God has done are in the Bible and its a really good book to read if you want to know what God is like.   But God knows that its easier to understand stuff we can see so thats why He decided to show us what He looks like by sending the Son, Jesus.   Remember that Jesus is a part of God, but He is a part we can see!!! (Week 12 Jesus teaches)

 Jesus came to show us what God is like.  He came as a baby and had a family because God loves families.  When he was little He went to church because God loves church.  Jesus had friends because God thinks friends are really important.  Jesus did lots of amazing miracles because God is amazing and can do anything - even impossible things.   But Jesus didnt just do wonderful things, He also told everyone what God was like. So what did Jesus say about God? Well, He said that God is LOVE.  ( 1 John 4:8)  God is made of love and He is where all the love in the world comes from.  Who loves you?  Who do you love?  Well all of that love comes from God.  Isnt that brilliant?
