week 8 temptation

Worship -  we have been singing this every week doing the actions in the chorus and playing instruments in the verses   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C986eLNNiOo

Last time we learned that when Jesus was a grown up he got baptised by John. Shall we hear about what happened next?

Jesus lived in a hot country a long time ago when there wasnt any electricity to make things go and no taps in peoples houses to get water.  People had to walk everywhere and they got their water from rivers and lakes.  Sometimes they dug down deep into the ground to find water.  It was hard work and lots of people were quite poor.  Jesus was a poor person.  He lived a simple life just like everyone else.  But after He got baptised God asked Him to do something really hard.  He asked Jesus to go away from his home, into the wilderness where there was no food or water or shelter and to wait.  Jesus didnt know what He was waiting for.  Waiting is hard even when you DO know what you are waiting for.  Have you ever been excited that your birthday is coming?  Or Christmas is nearly here?  Or maybe you are going to a birthday party but you have to wait for the right day?   Its hard isnt it?  We dont like waiting.   Well God asked Jesus to go far away from everyone and just ...... wait.

Jesus was hot, he was tired, and hungry.  He didnt have any food or water.  At night it was very dark and cold and there were wild animals wandering about.   I wonder if Jesus got a bit scared.  I wonder if he got a bit  fed up waiting.  He waited for days and days and nothing happened.  Sometimes, when something doesnt happen right away we give up dont we?  But Jesus didnt give up.  He kept waiting and trusting God.

Then guess what happened?   Someone came to Jesus in the wilderness.  Who do you think it was?  God?  An angel? A Just Eat delivery man with a big juicy pizza?   Nope.  It was the devil.

Does anyone know who the devil is?

The devil was one of God's angels who used to worship God in heaven.  But one day he decided would quite like to be worshipped himself.  In fact he thought he was so cool and amazing and talented that he should be worshipped and he tried to push God off His throne.  God was very upset and cross and threw the devil out of heaven onto the earth. God told the devil He would deal with him later. When he landed on earth he got a new name, Satan.   Satan is another name for the devil.    Satan was furious ( can you show me your crossest most ugly face?)  Yes, he looked like that.  He decided he was going to hate everything God loves.  God loves the world and everyone in it, so the devil hates the world and everyone in it.  God especially loves Jesus because Jesus is part of God.  So when the devil saw Jesus walking in the wilderness he thought '  Ah Ha!!  Now is my chance to hurt God.  Im going to get Jesus to worship ME! '

Satan tried all sorts of tricks to get Jesus to worship him.  He offered to give Him bread ( remember Jesus was really hungry)   He offered to give him power.  He even told Jesus he could make him fly ( would you like to be able to fly?  Yes, so would I)   Do you think Jesus said yes to any of these things?   No, He didnt.  Because He was listening for God's voice and wanted to do God's work.  He didnt want to follow the devil.   So in the end the devil gave up and went away.   And then God told Jesus He could go back home.  Jesus had been in the wilderness for 40 days.

Lets watch the story    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mc-x4qKY6Wc

Activity - temptation.

Put some sweets and biscuits on the table and tell the kids not to touch them.  Ask them how it feels to be able to see and smell something lovely and not be able to eat it.  That is what temptation feels like and its what Jesus felt when Satan was trying to get Him to worship him.   Give each child a box and tell them to shake it.  ( Put something noisy inside like cheerios or another breakfast cereal) .  Do you want to see whats inside?  Even if I tell you you arent allowed?

Let them eat the sweets/cereals.

Pepper and soap experiment.    https://www.facebook.com/reel/664741192285226

The pepper is like the temptation to do things God doesnt want us to do.  The soap is God.  Without Him we cant send the temptation away, but with Him we can. 😁

Colour in the picture (can use glue and sand for desert) opening the doors to find out whats behind them and closing them again when Jesus says NO!

Take away message - Jesus knows what its like to feel temptation.  Jesus listened to God and only did what God wanted Him to do.  We can do this too and listen to God not to temptation.
