Who is Jesus - week 1 Trinity

 God in three persons

The bible tells us that before there was anything, there was God.  But God isnt just one person He is three people!   God the Father - God the Son, Jesus - God the Holy Spirit.  This is a bit hard to understand so today we are going to be looking at what it means that God is three people.

1. Show an egg and ask what it is.   The whole thing is called an egg.  But when we break it ( do so) we discover that its made up of three different things.  The shell, the yolk and the white.  Separate the yolk from the white in a bowl.  The shell is like God the Father - it holds everything together and it protects what is inside.  The white is like the Holy Spirit.  It doesnt look very interesting but it protects the yolk and its the part of the egg thats really good for making things ( like cakes and meringues )  The yolk is like Jesus.  It is good for us, it looks perfect, it tastes great.   the shell by itself isnt an egg.  The white and the yolk by themselves arent an egg.  But together they make and egg.  God is made up of Father, holy Spirit and Son.

2) Same with an apple. Peel, flesh and seeds. The seeds can be planted to make more apple trees. Cut up apples to show them then give them out for snack.

3) Water.  Have a glass of water, a kettle of water and some ice cubes.   Explain that water steam and ice are all made of the same stuff.  But they all have a different shape.  Water can be wet, hard or steam but its all made of the same thing.  This is like God.  Father Son and Holy Spirit are all made of the same stuff.  They are all made of God.  They look different and they can do different things ( you cant walk on water but you can walk on ice.  You cant put ice through a seive but you can put water through one)  God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit do different things but they are all God,

16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”


Here we see Jesus who is a person, the Holy Spirit who is like a dove and God ( who we cant see but an hear) speaking from heaven.  All of them are God but they are 3 different ways God can look and sound and be.


3) Why is God three different things?    Because God is love and you cant love if you are all alone.  God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit love each other and love us!

explain that we can talk to God and Jesus and the Holy Spirit when we pray.  Mostly we talk to Jesus and the other two are always listening.  All three work together to answer our prayers. This term we are going to learn the pocket prayer and pray it every week,   Or if the group is older pray for three things every week.   1) thank God for all the good things in our lives ( ask the kids to close eyes and each one to say thank you for something)  2) say sorry for anything mean or naughty or greedy we have said or done or thought ( adult lead this prayer on behalf of all) 3) pray for someone we know ( ask the children to tell you the name of someone they want to pray for and write it down so we can keep praying for that person in coming weeks.

week 2 - nativity

 Last week we learned that God is made up of three parts.  Can we remember what they were? God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit live in heaven which is a special place that we cant see.  We know it is there but we can't see it.   Can you see the wind?  No, but you know it is there cos you can see it blowing things ( use a windmill to demonstrate)   We cant see God but we can see what He does, (and in the past lots of people saw what God had done and wrote down these things in a book.  All the stories of what God has done are in the Bible and its a really good book to read if you want to know what God is like.   But God knows that its easier to understand stuff we can see so thats why He decided to show us what He looks like by sending the Son, Jesus.   Remember that Jesus is a part of God, but He is a part we can see!!! (Week 12 Jesus teaches)

 Jesus came to show us what God is like.  He came as a baby and had a family because God loves families.  When he was little He went to church because God loves church.  Jesus had friends because God thinks friends are really important.  Jesus did lots of amazing miracles because God is amazing and can do anything - even impossible things.   But Jesus didnt just do wonderful things, He also told everyone what God was like. So what did Jesus say about God? Well, He said that God is LOVE.  ( 1 John 4:8)  God is made of love and He is where all the love in the world comes from.  Who loves you?  Who do you love?  Well all of that love comes from God.  Isnt that brilliant?
