Week 10 Mary and Martha
Jesus had friends. Three of His friends were called Lazarus, Mary and Martha. They lived in a town called Bethany and Jesus used to go and visit them and have tea with them and hang out. Remember that Jesus came to show us what God is like - God likes to hang out with His friends. We are His friends!!! Would you like Jesus to come and hang out with you and have tea at your house? That would be cool wouldnt it?
If Jesus came for tea what would you do?
Would you tidy up?
Make some food?
Set the table?
Maybe you would light some candles and put some nice music on
Thats what Martha decided to do. She got really busy tidying up and cooking and cleaning and being really busy. How did she feel? ( Use happy/sad paper plate faces)
When Jesus came to visit He brought some of His friends with Him, There were lots of people in the house. It was busy and noisy and everyone was talking and laughing and having fun. Martha was in the kitchen trying to get the food ready but her sister and brother werent helping. How do you think Martha felt? What could she have done to feel better? She could have asked for some help. But she didnt. She just got grumpier and grumpier. Can you show me your grumpy face? Yes, she looked like that.
What was Mary doing?
She was listening to Jesus. How did that make Mary feel (plate faces) Mary loved Jesus and she loved hearing His stories so she didnt help her sister, she chose to sit with Jesus instead. Martha got so cross she went out to the room where Jesus was and said ' Jesus! cant you please tell Mary to come and help me? Im rushed off my feet here, trying to get the food organised for everyone and she is being lazy and not doing anything'
What do you think Jesus said?
He said, ' actually Martha, Mary IS doing something. She is spending time with me, and that is much more important than fixing food and being busy. Dont get yourself so worried about things which dont really matter. Come and be with me, we can all get our own dinner'
Lets watch the story now
